Director's Statement

"from the drain"

Twenty Years of MUFF? How did we get here? Through a lot of blood sweat and tears I can tell you. But it's all in the name of Art and supporting new voices in Indy and Underground Cinema - both at home and abroad. And causing a little Joker style Chaos in Media along the way, to upset the complacent, the smug, the comfortable and to start interesting conversations about interesting topics. MUFF has done all this and plans to keep on doing it.

I've been in to the
Underground since I was a kid when my Nan would take me up the street to see The Drain. The Drain was a dark and deep drain that I used to drop leaves in to as a kid, and it fascinated me to no end as a young tyke. My interest in what 'lies underneath' has been on going  ever since. I celebrated the 25th Anniversary of my Hellfire Club only a two years back, this year it's 20 years of MUFF.

I founded MUFF, with my esteemed colleague Rebecca Sutherland way back in 2000, at the turn of the Millennium, we both felt a new screen voice was needed that championed the underdog in Australian Cinema. I was 30 years old. Now its MUFF 20 and I'm 50. We have come a long way with this festival and discovered an amazing list of filmmakers along the way, a virtual who's who of the best in Oz Cinema the last 20 years. I have ruffled a few feathers in this journey. But that's what I set out to do, so all good.

So, join us for The 20 Anniversary of MUFF this year Nov 24 to Nov 29 at Cracked Actors Theatre, which we hope can be a new home for MUFF. Support indy Cinema, indy opinion and free speech in general in the arts and society - and come celebrate 20 years of MUFF with us in 2019!

Best Regards,
